"A sword is a deadly weapon. A fighting technique is a killing technique." -Hitokiri Battousai Himura

The story of "Rurouni Kenshin" as told by Nobuhiro Watsuki-sensei is based on historically true events which occurred in Japan's turbulent past. Many of the characters in "Rurouni Kenshin" can be found easily in any Japanese history book.

It started 140 years ago, upon the demise of the Edo Dynasty, there is a samurai known as the Hitokiri Battousai (Sword Wielding-Killer) who has established the new era, The Meiji Era. He was a member of the Ishinshishi revolutionary, who wanted to turn Japan towards western influence, and he killed a lot of men to achieve the goals he believed in. He was the most brutal killer in that period. He is easily identified by the big cross-scar on his left cheek.

Eventually, it came to him that killing people was not such a great idea to start a new era. So, he chose to become a 'Korosazu No Rurouni' (a non-killing wanderer),abandoned the killer's sword for a sakabatou (reverse-bladed sword). He sworn to use his sakabatou only to protect the innocent and the helpless people as far as he can. He started his journey, helping people on the way...

After ten years...

In Meiji year 11, which is actually 1879,a short, red-haired wanderer with a cross-scar on his left cheek, was seen walking down the streets of Tokyo. He had his sakabatou on the left side, and now he is called Himura Kenshin...Then the story begins, Meiji year 11, when the master of Kamiya Kasshin Ryuu, Kamiya Kaoru called him to stay after he helped her...
